Menstrual cycle synchronization is an interesting topic that’s been on my mind a lot lately. It is the idea that if you live with or spend a significant amount of time with other menstruating people, your cycles will synchronize and your periods will happen around the same time. The first research on this phenomenon was conducted with college students and the effect was known as “the McClintock effect,” per the author of the study. But, surprise, surprise…it was not until a couple of years ago that the original research for this theory was criticized and several researchers concluded that the effect was due to math and probability rather than hormonal synchronization. A great example of how the female reproductive system needs so much more research and knowledge.
Throughout my life, I really believed in the period synchronization effect and felt more connected to my friends when we went through our periods together. Some camaraderie and moral support! An invisible medal of honor that indicated that we were so close to each other that we were synchronized.
The good news is that you don’t need to be in the business of probability and math to be connected with your bestie. Take this short newsletter as a reminder to connect with that friend who you consider your bestie, your family, or your tribe. Schedule that dinner, and send them a quick note simply letting them know how much you appreciate them. Have that tough conversation if needed. Friendships just like other relationships require work and effort and they are so worth it with the right type of people.
On that note, check The Other Significant Others by Rhaina Cohen where the author discusses how individuals choose friendships as the center of their lives and challenges us to define what we want from our relationships, not what is expected. How about for the next wedding you are invited, you bring your bestie as your plus one.
