Hello gorgeous!
Today we are discussing body image and self-love. It may sound contradictory to talk about this topic as I wait for my surgeon to remove my nose’s cast. Bear with me, while the surgery could have only been correctional, I decided to enhance my nose by taking into consideration my face’s symmetry and features. This was also something I wanted to do for many years, and I am incredibly grateful to do it as a 35-year-old independent female, who doesn’t give a fuck about what others may say/think. I feel confident and beautiful with my body and I see this surgery as an enhancement not as a primary factor to love me. But I don’t think I would have been in the same position if I had the surgery when I was 30 years old or younger. I only started loving my body and feeling sexy, and beautiful about four years ago. It is absolutely beautiful to not give a damn about what others think about our body and the decisions we make. So I am curious where you are in the self-love, confident journey?
If you identify as a female you can resonate with the many stereotypes that we grew up with. To summarize it, we can take a look at Ferrera’s monologue in the Barbie movie:
“It is literally impossible to be a woman. You are so beautiful, and so smart, and it kills me that you don't think you're good enough. Like, we have to always be extraordinary, but somehow we're always doing it wrong.”
Growing up, I was asked many times to get a nose job. I am sure that still influenced my decisions today and I was probably partially influenced by media and stereotypes. Nonetheless, I believe I made a conscious decision, that took many years, multiple discussions, and many menstrual cycles. (Believe it or not, your menstrual cycle affects your perception of your body image.)
As indicated in, “Period-Related Body Dysmorphia Can Make You Feel Ugly During Your Menstrual Cycle,” by Meghan Nesmith, if someone is already experiencing some type of disorder or issue, PMS will exacerbate the symptoms. The article also points out that body dissatisfaction is at its highest in the perimenstrual phase, and females perceive their bodies as larger during their periods. The sad thing is that scientists do not know why these things happen but they think that PMS can distort our sensory cues and people may focus on things they already struggle with.
So next time you are feeling uncomfortable about your body make sure you check your PMS symptoms and remind yourself that it will pass! Also, do you want to hear more about self-love and body positivity tools?
Period Tips By Phase
*note: not all periods or phases are equal. You might spend a longer or shorter number of days in each of the phases than other women, girls, trans and non binary people you know that menstruate.*
