🎉Welcome to Issue 12!

Hello and welcome to another episode of “I researched words related to the vagina and found interesting stuff I didn’t like” with your host Lilly…I’m Lilly.

Halloween happened this weekend and you know I went out there and absolutely SLAYED in my costume. There’s nothing like Salvador Dali as Dr. Frankenfurter twerking to some Bad Bunny. Anyway, it is the best time of the year to be scared and I was curious so I looked up the etymology of the word ‘Hysteria.’

Loading...

Hysteria (uncontrollable fear and panic), hysterical (something VERY funny), and hysterectomy (surgical removal of the uterus) all have the same root word. Their shared root is the Greek term ‘Hystera’ which means ‘womb’. Back in the day (the 1600s) English speakers started using the word hysteria to refer to psychological medical diagnoses that were very specific to women - including acting uncontrollably emotional - because back then they thought it was the uterus, more specifically a ‘wandering womb,’ that was causing all the problems. The term was used as a blanket term to describe a range of illnesses well into the 20’s century. Hysteria-related diagnoses were even part of the DSM up until the 1980s. So just to be clear, people thought that the womb is moving around on the inside of the body causing people to act irrationally. Oooh and the “best” part: they also had all sorts of quirky, fun treatments to fix hysteria. So…let’s play a game! I’m going to list some options and you can choose which one you think was a treatment.

If you guessed all of the above, ding ding ding! You got it correct. Those were all used! This womb of ours has apparently been nothing but trouble over the years. Ugh sometimes I just want to take my wandering womb and throw it at all the idiots that have come up with this nonsense. Especially since today we still use words like hysteria and hysterical pretty regularly in our language. The uterus is neither hilarious nor the cause of illness. It’s an organ chilling in our belly, cool as a cucumber. Sure for some of us, the womb does its monthly satanic sacrificial waterfall and but that’s all! No mental illness or crazies.

Now, take your beautiful uterus and scroll down for a tip, something provocative, something clitty and more!

Period Tips By Phase

*note: not all periods or phases are equal. You might spend a longer or shorter number of days in each of the phases than other women, girls, trans and non binary people you know that menstruate.*

⚡️ Follicular (Day 1 - 13) → Move that body

✮ If you’re thinking of getting pregnant then it’s time to bust out the shrimp cocktails in this phase. Shrimp is a lean protein with lots of zinc and studies show that zinc is a big helper in cell growth when the egg is released from the ovaries.
